Characteristics of a Humble Man
(November 24, 2025)
In October 1989, Media Magnate, Ted Turner of Turner Broadcasting, published
his own version of The Ten Commandments, calling them “Ten Voluntary
Initiatives.” He dubbed the original Ten Commandments given by God to Moses
and the world from Mt. Sinai, “outdated for the problems of the modern world.”
This was not the move of a humble man.
In contrast, even though Evangelist Billy Graham met with President’s, dignitaries
and Kings from all over the world, he never forgot his roots in rural North Carolina
and consistently demonstrated humble submission to God and His Word.
Which leads us to the first characteristic of a humble person – submission to God.
Regardless of appearances, a man or woman who does not humble themselves
before the God who made them is still wrapped in pride. They are in rebellion
because they will not believe on His only Son, Jesus Christ, and submit to Him
(John 3:19-21).
Another characteristic of a humble person is patience. Instead of demanding the
world conform to their wishes, as does the proud person, the humble exhibit
forbearance. Proverbs 19:11 says, “A person’s wisdom gives him patience; It is to
one’s glory to overlook an offense.”
The last characteristic of a humble person we will examine this time is wisdom.
Proverbs 11:2 says, “When pride comes, then comes shame; But with the humble
[there is] wisdom.” True humility exhibits itself in wisdom, patience and
submission to God.
So, how are you doing? Do you exhibit these characteristics of humility? Do I?
While no one is perfect, what is the general direction of your life? I dare say that if
you are characterized by anger, foolishness, and stubbornness, you can bet that
pride is lurking nearby. Would you humble yourself before God, right now?
