Do You Need to Change Clothes - Part 1
“Are you going to wear THAT?” My wife, Olive, asked me as I headed out the door for a meeting with a pastor on Paraclete business.
“Why not?” I replied. “What’s wrong with it?”
“Because you’ve worn it 3 days in a row!” She said a bit incredulously.
“He doesn’t know that.” I stated matter-of-factly. “Besides it’s not dirty.” (Meaning there are no coffee stains on it).
Olive gave me “the look”, and I humbly went downstairs to change my clothes.
Does this sound familiar to anyone? In my defense, I was not being lazy, but I wanted to save Olive some laundry work. (You’re right, that didn’t fly with her either).
Anyway, as important as it is to change the clothes we wear, it is even more important to change our spiritual clothes. Some of us men have been “wearing” the same dirty habits for many years, not just days, and it’s time to make a change, don’t you think?
Ephesians 4:20-24 tells us to “…put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires; to be made new in the attitude of your minds, and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness.”
Do you have a habit or character flaw that has been plaguing you for a long time? Would you like to be free of it? You can be! The key is to be made new in the attitude of your mind. In other words, change your clothes. Since God commands this, it is not only possible but critical to obey God in this.
It all starts with a decision. Will you determine to repent of the behaviors or sins of the mind that bind you, and seek the help of the Holy Spirit to make a change? Freedom is awaiting you. Christ promised it to those who would learn His ways. Next time we’ll examine how to make this change happen.
