Do you Wiggle in God’s Lap

Do You Wiggle in God’s Lap?

Do you ever ‘wiggle in God’s lap’? I mean, you climb up into your heavenly Father’s lap with every intention of resting while you tell Him all your troubles and listen for His calm, wise, loving reply, but before you can settle into a comfortable position, you get antsy and think about all you have to do that day, about all the decisions you have to make, about the worries and cares that flood your mind and all of a sudden you find yourself squirming to get down? If you do, you are not alone!

Why is it so hard for us to rest in God’s presence? Could it be that we have more doubt in us than we want to admit? Like Thomas the disciple, we know in our heads that God is there and that Jesus cares about everything in our lives but…Or maybe we are pretty sure God can work on our behalf, yet there are all those unanswered prayers, how do you explain that? Or maybe, and this may be closest to the truth, we lack the patience and trust to let God be God and do things in His way and in His time? Ouch!

I have been trying to learn the real meaning behind Psalm 46:10 “Be still and know that I am God”. I am quite sure that if I live to be 100 I will never plumb the depths of the practical application of that command of God, but hey, if I never start then I won’t learn, right? And learning something is better than not learning anything.

Jesus said in Matthew 11:28-30 “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light”. There it is! The New Testament version of Psalm 46:10. “Be still and know that I am God”.

Will you accept your Savior’s invitation today? He is calling you. He is waiting for you. His lap has an empty place with your name on it. Climb up on it and rest. Don’t worry if you wiggle, He knows you will until you get used to His calm and loving presence. Why not start today?
