Do Your Thoughts Glorify God?

There is a place where we as men go that we consider completely private. We believe that no one can see into this inner sanctum called our mind so sometimes we play with sin there. A lingering look at a bikini clad beauty at the beach seems quite harmless, after all, my wife won’t know, and I’m not really going to do anything about it, right? I mean, c’mon, God doesn’t expect me to keep my eyes closed all day, does He?

Well, the truth is God sees every thought and intent of our hearts. Hebrews 4:13 says, “Nothing in all creation is hidden from God’s sight. Everything is uncovered and laid bare before the eyes of Him to whom we must give account.”

And, according to 2 Corinthians 10:5, God DOES expect us to control our thoughts, it says, “…and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.” So, where does that leave you and me? In one word – RESPONSIBLE!

Men, the sooner we accept that responsibility the better off we, and our family, will be, yes – our family. Our wife and children may not be able to read our minds, but Scripture also says that our actions will issue forth from what is in our hearts. If we do not guard our hearts and minds, it will not be long before we will say things or do things that will compromise our testimony, damage our family relationships, and eventually ruin our witness for Christ.

Proverbs 4:23 says, “Guard your heart above all else, for it determines the course of your life” (NLT). Men, we cannot fill our minds with violence, hate, and moral filth and expect that it will not spill out into our decisions.

So, how do we guard our heart and mind? First, we must begin a relationship with Christ by faith in His work on the cross. Then, the only way to keep our mind pure is to study God’s Word, memorize, meditate on it, and put it into practice. And this can only happen if we maintain an intimate relationship with Jesus Christ through faith and obedience.

All of this takes effort. But we do not walk alone. The Holy Spirit lives in us by faith and He will help us carry out the will of God for our lives. Then our thoughts WILL glorify God, and so will our daily walk with Him!
