Is God's Kindness Leading You to Repentance?

(The names in this story are fictional)

The family is all sitting around the living room one Sunday afternoon when suddenly Tom says to his father, “Dad, I need to tell you something. When you show up drunk to watch me play baseball, it embarrasses me so much I want to hide.”

Linda, Tom’s sister, pipes in, “Yeah, Dad, when you drink, I’m scared to come home. I never know what you’re going to do.”

The father, Bill, looks around the room and all eyes are keenly focused on him. Bill has found himself in the middle of what is called “an intervention”. Out of love his family has gathered around Bill to confront him with the effects of his drinking on their lives in the hope that he will decide to get help.

In the same way, our heavenly Father in His loving kindness leads us through various means to come to Him in repentance. Romans 2:4 says, “Or do you show contempt for the riches of His kindness, forbearance and patience, not realizing that God’s kindness is intended to lead you to repentance?” Call it a “Heavenly Intervention.”

Are you experiencing trouble? Does your life resemble a trainwreck? Does it seem there is no way out? If you have never humbled yourself before your Creator God, it may be that He is trying to get to your heart through a “Heavenly Intervention.” These events are not merely chance happenings. They have the specific purpose of getting your eyes onto the God who sent His Son, Jesus Christ, to pay for your sins by dying on the cross and rising again 3 days later in order to bring you to Himself!

He is being extremely kind to you. He loves you too much to leave you to face the consequences of your sin and rebellion towards Him. He wants you to repent, that is turn from the direction your life is heading, confess your sins and accept His offer of forgiveness through faith in His Son, Jesus. Will you turn to Him right now?
