Tina Turner recorded the song “What’s Love Got to Do with It?” in 1984 for her album “Private Dancer.” It’s a sad song about a person trying to separate love from the sex act, making it a purely physical ritual. A famous line in the song says, “…who needs a heart when a heart can be broken?” But hidden in the song, I believe is a longing for a heart-connection as well as a physical one.
Our Creator believes that sex is more than physical pleasure. Just read the Song of Solomon, where love is the motivation for the physical and completes the lovemaking act.
This Friday is Valentine’s Day when romantic love is celebrated. Sadly, for many married couples it is only a reminder of the fact that there isn’t any romantic love in their relationship. Past hurts, bitterness, neglect, and unforgiveness have choked out the romance and all that is left is the shell of a former vibrant love.
If this is you, may I encourage you to do three things – first, search your heart for any bitterness that may be hindering you from experiencing romantic feelings for your spouse. Second, pray for a change in your relationship with your spouse. Ask God to intervene and make a way where there seems to be no way. Third, ask your spouse if he/she is interested in seeking help through biblical counseling. If there is willingness to do that, there is hope.
Next week we will examine what to do if nothing works and you are stuck in a passionless relationship with your spouse.
For now, God strengthen and bless you as you remain faithful to Him and your family!
