“Road Test” Your Christianity
How does a man know whether or not he is a spiritual man? I mean, is it the length of his devotional time? Is it how many people he witnesses to in a day? I would like to suggest that the real test of a man’s spirituality is the “road test”. I’m talking about his demeanor when he is behind the wheel of his car.
Pastor and teacher Philip DeCoursey says that “you can tell the bigness of a man by the size of the things that make him angry”. If a guy is more incensed over someone cutting him off in traffic than the fact that over 50 million babies have lost their lives through abortion since 1973 then maybe a soul check is in order.
Life is full of minor irritations. Waiting in the convenience store line behind a customer with a pricing difficulty can be frustrating; the fast food restaurant that messes up your order for the third time in a week is a pain; but what about our reaction to the injustice of child abuse or sex trafficking?
Have you ever been motivated to complain to the restaurant manager about poor service by your waitress? I think many of us have. Are we as motivated to write or call our congressman endorsing a bill that would protect the lives of pre-born babies?
I think you get the idea. Micah 6:8 emphasizes my point rather clearly. We read “He has showed you, o man, what is good. And what does the LORD require of you [but] to act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.”
Men, I am not saying that I am perfect in this matter. The Lord has brought me up short many a time when I have fumed at another driver for something I have done many times myself, if the truth be told. What I am saying is let’s take a hard look at ourselves and evaluate just what makes us angry and why. Then go to the Lord and humbly seek His forgiveness for our hypocrisy and shallowness, and ask for grace and strength to make a change. Then when we pass the “road test” we will give God glory for His work in our lives and our wives and children will thank us, too!
