Walk in the Stillness
(May 3, 2026)
When we go camping, my wife, Olive, loves to take a rowboat out on the lake
early in the morning and enjoy the stillness. The water is smooth like a mirror
reflecting the beauty of God’s creation all over the lake. The only sounds are the
paddles dipping in the cool water and the loons calling to their mates.
I too, have enjoyed the stillness of the dawn of a new day while fishing, The only
sounds are the whirring of my reel as I cast my lure out into the lake hoping to
entice some sleepy bass to an early morning breakfast.
Have you ever wished that you could carry that calm with you throughout your
day? Is that even possible in this age of constantly ringing cell phones, the noise
of traffic, and the incessant intrusion of your private thoughts insisting on making
their voices heard?
Thank the Lord, the answer is YES! It is not only possible to be at peace
throughout your day, but it is commanded. Psalm 46:10 says, “…be still and know
that I am God.” My good friend, Carl Thomas, tells me frequently, “Mike, cease
striving and know that He is God!” The rest of that verse says, “I will be exalted
among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.” Do you realize that when we
live our lives at peace with God and with the peace of God in us that God is
exalted?
I remember watching one of my best friends, Steve Daniels, live with the death
sentence of terminal cancer. His joy and peace were amazing. He had learned to
“…be still and know God” even in the midst of what most would call the worst
that could happen to a person.
So, how does one attain that peace and calm regardless of the circumstances?
There is only way – that is to abide in Christ and let Christ abide in us. Jesus said,
“My peace I give to you, not as the world gives…In this world you will have
trouble. But be of good cheer! I have overcome the world!”
