Safety in Scripture Memorization

Safety in Scripture Memorization

(Apr 26, 2026)

Do you want to be safe? “Of course,” you say, “What a silly question! Everyone
wants to be safe.” And I agree. So, isn’t it odd that many Christians ignore the
admonition of Scripture to hide God’s word in their hearts, so they won’t sin
against God? (Psalm 119:11)
Maybe we don’t take Scripture memorization seriously because we don’t take sin
seriously. After all, God’s Word also says in Romans 6:23, “The wages of sin is
death.” And in Romans 8:13 the Word warns us that “…if you live according to the
sinful nature you will die…” That is spiritual death, eternity in hell, my friend.
With such high stakes, isn’t it time that we not only study God’s Word, but that
we memorize it, so we won’t sin against Him? Memorization of the Word of God
is critical to “walking in the Spirit” (Galatians 5:16). If you are experiencing
difficulty walking with the Holy Spirit and overcoming your sinful nature, this may
be the reason why.
Our minds are going to be filled with something. Oh, how we need to be careful
to guard our minds and be discerning as to what we put in them! If we fill our
minds and hearts with the garbage of this world’s “wisdom” so called, we
shouldn’t be surprised when we are powerless to withstand the temptations of
the evil one.
In His temptations in the desert at the beginning of His ministry, Jesus, won the
victory over Satan because He knew the Word of God and the God of the Word.
He very skillfully resisted every temptation even when the adversary misused the
Word of God deceitfully to trap Him. Do you have that kind of knowledge of God’s
Word hidden away in your heart? Do I?
If the Holy Spirit is speaking to you about this, don’t ignore Him or put off making
plans to study and memorize the “Sword of the Spirit!” This is the best way to
take sin seriously and engage in the battle to overcome it skillfully.
The Navigators has a great plan for scripture memory called the Topical Memory
System. You can find out more on thenavigators.org.
