The Line of Reconciliation

There is a line that is drawn in every marriage called the “Line of Reconciliation.”
This is the place where oneness occurs in the marriage relationship. Because of
our sinful, selfish nature all relationships tend to drift towards isolation. We are
prone to go our own way, instead of seeking to maintain oneness. According to
Genesis 2:24 oneness is God’s goal for your marriage, and mine.
In a healthy marriage the husband and wife live at the Line of Reconciliation.
When conflict occurs or drifting starts, one partner will call the other back to the
Line of Reconciliation and oneness is maintained when the erring one returns
quickly to the Line.
But what if the conflict or drifting continues for an extended period of time? This
is when isolation occurs and the marriage relationship begins to suffer as the
oneness slowly disintegrates into two strangers living in the same house, more as
roommates than lovers and best friends.
If this describes your marriage, please don’t despair! There is plenty of hope that
your oneness can be restored. Author, Jim Talley says, “The key for reconciliation
to happen is for the person who want[s] to stay in the marriage to always stay at
the line of reconciliation…”
There are two keys to restoring the oneness in your relationship with your
spouse, 1) Seek God with all your heart; you cannot do this by yourself, and 2) Go
yourself to the Line of Reconciliation, taking the Lord Jesus with you, and stay
there until your partner returns. Be ready to forgive and receive your partner
back without strings.
God will give you everything you need to camp out at the Line of Reconciliation
until your spouse returns, the patience, unconditional love, and forgiveness. I
leave you with this encouragement from Psalm 27:14, “Wait for the LORD; be
strong and take heart and wait for the LORD.” God is faithful!
